I do this all the time. When traveling to a new city, I read the relevant Wikipedia article. When I hear about something past of which I am unaware, I find a summary. I try to be a generalist in as many things as I can first, then go deep in subjects I love.

 Like the podcasts of last week, sometimes a 30 minute commitment is better or easier or just the right move over the 10 hour book.
